Building a Career in Life Sciences: 5 Things I Wish I Knew Sooner

Lessons from the field for students and early-career professionals

Getting started in life sciences is exciting – but it can also be daunting. With so many possible career paths (and job titles you’ve never even heard of yet), it’s easy to feel unsure about where to start or whether you’re “doing it right.”

We asked some seasoned life sciences professionals to share what they wish they’d known earlier in their careers. Here’s what they said:

Table of Contents

1. You don’t need to have it all figured out.

Most people didn’t land their “forever” role straight out of uni. In fact, many discovered their niche after trying a few different paths – regulatory, medical affairs, quality, research, commercial. Don’t be afraid to explore, ask questions, and take roles that help you learn what you do and don’t want.

2. Soft skills are not ‘extra’ – they’re essential.

Communication, critical thinking, collaboration – these aren’t just “nice to have.” They’re what help you grow, lead, and stand out. Whether you’re writing reports or presenting findings, your ability to convey ideas clearly will set you apart.

3. The hidden job market is real.

Not every role is advertised. Building relationships with recruiters, mentors, and peers in the industry can open doors you didn’t know existed. Stay connected, attend events, and don’t be shy about reaching out.

4. Progression doesn’t always mean up.

Some of the most rewarding career moves are lateral – changing focus, gaining broader experience, or deepening expertise. Don’t chase promotions just for the title. Chase what makes you curious and what gives you purpose.

5. Your voice helps shape the future.

If you’re just starting out, your experience matters. The challenges you face – from job applications to early workplace culture – are important indicators of how our industry is supporting the next generation.

That’s why we’re inviting early-career professionals and students to contribute to the 2025 On Q Salary & Job Market Survey.

Your input helps highlight the barriers, gaps, and opportunities that exist today – so we can build a better pipeline for tomorrow. Plus, you’ll go into the draw to win a $750 cash prize or one of 10 x $50 Uber vouchers!
